The biggest bonus for paying for it is also one of it's biggest problems - by buying RPGMaker, you gain an unlimited license for it's assets within the RPGMaker family. People have made VNs, racing games, Zelda-style Action RPGs are popular (and have varying levels of jank), point and click adventure games, and so on, all with varying levels of success. On the other hand, it is very, very good at making S/NES style RPGs - your Final Fantasy, your Dragon Warrior mimic can be made right out of the box with no adjustments at all - and the further you drift from that, the harder it gets and the more you spend time fighting RPGMaker itself. The later versions (as in, like 2005's RPGMaker XP onward) even have a scripting or plugin system to allow you to either expand it yourself or, more likely, find people who have expanded it.

Teaches you things like Doors, Chests, NPCS, etc do not exist as separate things but are all the same sort of class of object, teaches you how to manipulate variables and booleans (RPGMaker calls them switches), teaches you a bit about balance, and so on. It'll give you a better understanding of how to separate the "playing" part from "building" a game. On the plus side, because it does all the heavy lifting for you, you can get it installed and have a playable "technically a game" with quests that the game recognizes you completed in a day (assuming you pick up things pretty quickly). My friend recommended RPG Maker XP so that's the one I got, I think ill chip away and teach myself stuff for a hour or 2 every night.
